Poker+
You will need
- Two decks of cards for up to 4 players; four decks for up to eight (using different coloured backs will help to separate them later
- Two d14 dice of different colours, one for the black suits, one for the red (a die app will work if you don't have weird dice like that)
- A way of tracking points per player
Setup
- Shuffle both (all) decks together. Do not remove jokers.
- Deal each player a deck of fourteen cards.
- Deal two cards face up in the centre of the table; this will form the reserve.
- Each player draws three cards to their hand.
The first lead player is the person to have played a deck builder game. Roll a die/flip a coin if there’s a tie.
Play
Players take turns playing into their playfield to build poker hands for points. Hands built in the playfield remain face up, they are public knowledge. Play as many rounds as you want.
Turns
Turns play in the following sequence: Roll the dice; Play cards; Draw back your hand.
On your turn, you may take one of three actions.
When playing into your playfield, you may only play one card whose colour and chirality (evens/odds) match the dice. If you have a card which exactly matches the colour and number of a die, you may play that card and a second card.
- Play from your hand into a hand on your playfield.
- Play from the reserve into a hand on your playfield. Replace that card from the reserve deck.
- Discard any one of you cards. If you discard a royal, take its action.
Discarding a royal allows you to perform one of the following actions:
- Ace: Split in two, or merge two of, any of the hands in your playfield.
- Jacks: Play a card from the reserve into a hand on your playfield; played card must match a die value.
- Queens: Play a card from the reserve into a hand on your playfield; dice values don’t apply.
- Kings: Play a card from your hand into a hand on your playfield; dice values don’t apply.
- Joker: Play any card, either from your hand or the reserve, into any playfield; dice values don’t apply.
End of the Round
A round ends when all players run out of cards, or once all four jokers are on the playfield.
Players tally the values of their hands, according to the scoring table below. The player with the most points wins the round. You may optionally tally points across rounds for a “legacy” game.
Not every possible hand has been accounted for because I’m lazy and didn’t feel like it. If you encounter a new hand feel free to discuss/debate/fight to the death with your opponents to assign a value. Feel free to submit a pull request if you want to add one.
